Getting techNickL
Hey! I'm Nick Langle (on this site, a.k.a. techNickL), a Product Manager and Lead UX Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). I help to align innovation and collaboration between research analysts, engineers, and developers - using knowledge of UX design principles as guidance to bring performant, fun, and easy to use web products online.
I believe the web should be:
- performant
- sustainable
- inclusive
- ethical
- useful
- enjoyable
My Process
My product development process begins with product and requirements planning and an exploration of your standing on sustainability. With a rough concept of those requirements in place, I then conduct research to help define the target audience and test their support of the planned goals – to ensure we're building the correct product to solve the needs. We'll work together to establish a baseline for sustainability metrics.
With our plan in place, using my solid understanding of user experience (UX) principles, I'll lead the UX design to establish user flows for client review.
I have a history of developing performant and accessible user interfaces that results in an intuitive and delightful product interface. I'll challenge you on final design decisions – let's build an optimized solution for the audience. I will thoroughly test and vet the product with various auditing tools; the result will be an eco-friendly web product that will score highly in performance, accessibility, search engine optimization (SEO), web best practices, security, etc.
I'll assist with your deployment and integration strategy, finding the best cloud management and CI/CD methods to suit your product needs.
I'll assist with establishing marketing and UTM campaigns and setting up dashboards for tracking analytics metrics and engagement.
I am along for the ride in end-to-end product development and deployment.
My Experience
It takes more than 10,000 hours to become world-class at a skill. I have been fortunate in that I was able to explore and hone my passions by working across different tech sectors and participating in many projects and programs. The result is that I have gained 10,000+ hours of experience in each of these areas: project management, leadership, front-end development, user interface design, user experience design, and sustainability.
Using my process and beliefs as my north star, I've provided technical expertise in projects ranging from private industry to public sector projects for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the White House.
This site is a laboratory and sandbox for researching and exploring performance related ideas for the web (currently, the test subject of this site is Svelte). Any thoughts, ideas, opinions, etc. are expressly my own.
Cheers,
Nick
